Reps reduce age qualification for presidency, govs, senate to 30yrs

The Bill seeking to reduce the age qualifications for interested candidates to contest for the positions of President, governor and senate in the country to 30 years yesterday passed second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill, which also makes provision for independent candidacy into the country’s electoral process, further reduces the age qualifications to contest for the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly to 25 years.
The Bill is an alteration of section 65, 106, 131 and 177 of the 1999 constitution which had prescribed qualification into the office of President to 40 years and above, office of governors and senate, 35 years and above as well as House of Representatives and state Houses of Assembly to 25 years and above.

In his lead debate, the sponsor of the bill, Tony Chinedu Nwulu representing Oshodi-Isolo 11 Federal Constituency of Lagos State, on platform of  Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, noted that electing candidates into public offices was an important aspect of democratic practices.
He stated:   “Countries like the United Kingdom parliament decided in 2006 to lower their age of candidacy from 21 to 18, which had existed since the Parliamentary Elections Act 1695. An age candidacy of 25 would encourage greater youth participation in politics.”
Nwulu stated that many countries world wide had called for a reduction in age qualification into elected offices, adding  that the bill was a demonstration of the growing desire and demand of youths to participate in the democratic process.
According to him, “this desire itself could be viewed as a sufficient warrant for young people to participate, demonstrate a willingness to engage and fulfill the burdens of office.”
On the Independent candidacy, he stressed the need to open up the space for lawmakers to come in as independent candidates.
He said:  “It is pertinent now to amend the constitution to make room for independent candidates to widen the democratic processes in our elections, and above all to encourage our young ones to fully participate in all elective offices.”

Ibori accuses British prosecutors of witholding information

Lawyers representing former governor of Delta state, James Ibori, have accused Britain's prosecuting authorities of withholding information from them regarding alleged corruption by a British police officer who is involved in Ibori's investigation and also making misleading statements in court.

The lawyers made the allegations at the resumed hearing of the case against Ibori at the Crown Court, Southwark UK yesterday June 6th.

Ibori, who was Governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007, is serving a 13 year sentence in a British jail after pleading guilty in 2012 to 10 counts of fraud and money laundering. Ibori's defence team applied for the presiding judge, Judge Tomlinson, to permanently halt court proceedings on the confiscation of Ibori’s assets, which has dragged on for many years.

The judge in his ruling, said taking such a decision would amount to a challenge on Ibori’s convictions, a matter that should probably be dealt with by the Court of Appeal, a higher court. He adjourned the case to tomorrow, Wednesday June 8th.

University of Ilorin lecturer resigns after audio tape of him sexually harassing one of his student leaks

Dr Mohammed Sani Idiagbon, pictured above, who was the Head of Department of the University of Ilorin, has reportedly resigned from office after an audio where he was asking for sexual favors from one of his students named Faith, leaked online.
According to Sahara Reporters, who leaked the audio last week, Faith is a 200 level student of his department who had gone to him regarding her score for a continuous assessment test he set for her class sometime ago.
In the audio, Dr Idiagbon could be heard telling Faith to allow him touch her breast. Faith then told him that her breast is paining her because she was having her menstrual cycle. She also told him that the office was not conducive for such act. The lecturer then told Faith to lock the office door so they could have privacy which she did but still resisted his advances.
Angered by her reluctance, Dr. Idiagbon told her she is not the only one and so she should not feel so special and eventually told her to leave the office and not return.
Reacting to the incident, the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, confirmed the incident to Sahara Reporters, saying Dr. Idiagbon has resigned after he was suspended and removed as the head of the English department. He also refused to honor an invitation of the Staff Disciplinary Committee, choosing instead to resign.
Akogun further stated that the university is investigating the matter and will ensure that the lecturer is duly punished if found guilty of the allegations against him. In his words,

“The university frowns against sexual harassment or any other harassment at that. The university is making necessary investigation and once we are done, the culprit will be brought to book.”

The sub-dean of school's student affairs, Dr. Yussuf, said the case was reported to the Students’ Support Centre shortly after the Easter break in April.
